In my endeavor to learn more about food I visited The Black Hills Farmers Market. I have never felt more of a warm welcome here in the Midwest than from the community of farmers. Reaching out to the community is one of the greater challenges faced by young chefs around the Midwest. Because of the price of retail in these markets being so high not many people can afford it.
I have lived in Rapid City my entire life and just last year I actually discovered that we hosted a farmers market. Now it being Winter I understand that vendors don’t want to stand out in the freezing cold after lugging all of their products from miles away. Lucky enough for them, the college that I am attending right now -Western Dakota Tech- has opened their doors on Saturday mornings. From 9am-1pm vendors can now sell during the winter months.
Although the Farmers Market isn’t a large one (like you would find in the bigger cities) it is a humble one with some remarkably interesting people who make their living off of selling great tasting products. From chicken, pork, canned and baked goods, eggs, and even hot sauces made with Tepin chilis, one can only imagen the possibilities of the different dish combinations.
Home Grown Pork & Poultry
I for one could not wait to stop by the Home Grown Chicken and Pork trailer set up near the entrance to the commons, I was excited the man operating the stand was willing to do a video interview with me, afterward he even offered me a 10% discount on some amazing pork sausage!

I felt a real connection with all of the vendors at the Black Hills Farmers Market, everyone had an amazing attitude and were completely transparent in sharing details about their products. These are the people I would love to continue working with and maybe visit a few of their ranches, farms, and kitchens to further gain an understanding of the lifestyle that these people go through.
